Flintlock Entry Pipe Carving

In this video, Mike shares how he adds detail to his flintlocks by carving some traditional details around the entry pipe of his Isaac Haines inspired longrifle. The tools used in this process are simple and appropriate for the time. They include files, scrapers, skew chisels, and V chisels.

Starting with studying original pieces, Mike lays out the carving on the stock with a pencil before using a V chisel to establish the main lines. To define the volume of the carving, wood is removed from around the scrolls with a skew. Much like the video where we discussed the cheek piece carving, the stock is shaped to give the illusion that the carving is layered atop the stock.

This build has been Mike's winter project. Having never built his own personal flintlock rifle, he took some time to build one for himself to get ready for the 2021 muzzleloading season.
