The Bill “Mad Monk” Knight Blackpowder Resource Archive | The Open Range: The complete Mad Monk Files

As of writing I haven’t received word from Bill for a few months, a thread of the ALR forum makes note that he may have passed on. I’m sorry I couldn’t get his story recorded.

When word of Hodgdon closing GOEX broke last fall, Bill was one of the first people to reach out to me and offer his knowledge about blackpowder manufacturing. Bill has been a concrete source for blackpowder information and testing for decades, he extended a great kindness is answering my questions and guiding me through my reporting so it would be as informative and accurate as I could make it.

With word of Bill’s passing, I wanted to make sure there was an archive of Bill’s knowledge available, fearing it could be lost in the digital ether without it’s steward. Thankfully, Bill had the foresight to archive his files and research on “Archive.org” to make it freely available for generations. I’ve included the link below.

I encourage you to save this link and download the files to your own devices. Bill published this information under the Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 4.0 International license, allowing it to be shared to anyone wanting to learn. Print off a copy and save it to your physical library as well, the information was published in 2001 but I assure you it is a good resource.

If you’d like to read more of Bill’s work, check out his post history on the American Longrifles Forum where he would discuss load development and velocities among many other things.

I’d like to thank Bill for sharing his knowledge with me and the world.
