Double loaded muzzleloader injures 3 during hunting season sight-in

Three people were injured at a county range this month after an inline muzzleloader was ignited after being double loaded.

The gun had accidentally been loaded twice before it was shot, according to the sheriff's office. It happened around 11:12 a.m. at the McMiller Sports Center.

A 36-year-old man suffered injuries to his hand and forearm and had to be brought to Froedtert Medical Center in Wauwatosa, the sheriff's office said. Two others had minor injuries.

The man's life injuries were not life-threatening, authorites said.

Accounts by people who were at the range or in the same area claim this double load was made up of 2 stacked powder pellets, a bullet, 2 more pellets and a bullet. This detail has not been verified.

This event serves as an important reminder to always ‘witness mark’ your ramrod, by marking your ramrod at the muzzle when the rifle is loaded so you can quickly and safely verify that your rifle is loaded.
